I want to add a second battery to my truck (OBS) and have the starting battery disconnect when the ignition is off so any accessories used will run off the secondary battery and not kill the starting battery. I have seen the low cost solenoids that activate when the ignition is on. However, those things get real hot after a while and I'm not so sure that is good. I have also seen the higher priced isolators that use diodes (I think) to disconnect the starting battery.
Anyone added a second battery? How did you isolate the starting battery?
