You have to remove the plastic covering if there is ANY acid leaded onto them. They will wick acid. Actually if it's wicked into the wire strands, the wire is toast in short order. Most likely die when you least want it to.
Many mechanics use the longer bolt and nut method. Only if acid hasn't leaked onto nor wicked into the wire. Hardened brass best, but any plated bolt will do. Thread the nut onto the bolt and bottomed onto the head of the bolt. Stack up your wire lugs and insert the bolt/nut. Thread it till bottoms into the battery post. Back off bolt head 1/2 turn. Then tighten the nut onto the stack of lugs till tight..all the while keeping the bolt head from turning.
