More than just for looks, that wider rim gives the same tire vs a standard rim width, much more "performance" potential, but at the risk of damage to both rim & sidewall.
Mine are Michelin LTX-AT & MS LT265/75R17 C/E's on Alcoa Classic 16x10 wheels. A nominal 10 inch section width tire on a 10" wide rim (bead to bead). The tire is now almost 12 inches in section width on this rim.
