In bad cases, becareful cutting apart the wire insulation. That's all holding the "powdered" wire inside together. That dust is loaded with acid and will eat other stuff up.
Have actually seen powder poured out of the insulation and single, corroided strand of wire left.
In cases where I think it's bad, mix up a batch of baking soda and water in a spray bottle. If any of the powder should get on anything...just spray those areas down and then watch the fizzing, bubbling...
Once the acid has gotten that far, the cable is going to be toast in time. Copper is VERY porous to this type of acid and will wick out acid till the acid has done it's job.
