Stan, I understand your preference for the peace and quite. We too dry camp only, finding that camping in the RV parks to be much akin to living in a large and tightly packed apartment complex. I camp to get away from it all and to enjoy nature as closely as it can be found to it's God intended natural state. Finding these areas is becoming harder to find but the places are there if you explore well enough and aren't afraid to pull over some pretty rough routes to get there. (Exploring without the trailer is many times a wise decision here)
Anyway I highly modified a Honda EU3500is so that it would fit in a storage area in our 27' Cameo. I find that using a only slightly modified stock muffler along with significantly extended exhaust plumbing to provide exterior exit of the exhaust, that the noise emmisions are far quiter than any of the high dollar motor home systems out there. It is so quiet that we can laze under the awning and scarely hear any noise from the gen-set, in fact if camping by a stream the pleasant babbling of the water totally hides any sound at all. If interested I could supply you with addition info and some templetes for the real tricky pieces required to make a workable housing that decreases weight along with size. (Still expect a project requiring about 80 hours)
If you are hard set on batteries alone I would recommend changing to 6 volt Trojan T105's which inhereantly have better staying power due to the individual cell capacities.
