I don't know that I would get an SUV just for looks or style, but if you want to, this is a free country - go for it. I wouldn't worry about resale values being affected by all of the hysterical whining coming from certain special interest groups these days. SUV's are extremely popular in spite of these misguided and hypocritical attacks and I'm sure will remain so for many years. Why? They are very, very versatile and useful. Personally, I feel that my suburban is the ideal vehicle for my family - it can hold 8 people and a lot of stuff, or 5 people and a LOT more stuff, or 2 people and too much stuff. I took an old refridgerator to the dump in it the other day. It'll go just about anywhere I want to go and I can pull a travel trailer with it. What more could you want? The downside? 13 MPG. I think similar things will be true with most SUV's just on a smaller scale.

I guess my point is this - you will almost certainly enjoy owning an SUV. Whether or not you need one is your decision, but PLEASE don't buy into any of that total and complete BULL$%#@ about how all SUV drivers are mean, selfish, hateful, insecure, dishonest, wasteful, and stupid supporters of terrorism.
