In Reply to: 4.10 rear to 3.73 or 3.42? would it greatly improve gas mileage with 8.1l? posted by Joe on January 14, 03 at 17:19:09:
I have my original 94 K2500 454 3.73, 8mpg city ,10 hwy(all hwy). added Banks powerpack($2000)->10mpg mixed and 11hwy with globs more grunt. My buddy bought same K2500 454 4.10 that year and still runs it(stock motor)- he gets 8&10 mpg. Now at 70mph I am turning my motor alittle slower with the 3.73 BUT.. Mr. 4.10 needs to give his motor less throttle to get the 6000lbs rolling. thats why mileage is the same. Owning your vehicle with 3.73's , is like having a K3500 dually and running single rear tires to save on rubber. I was stupid to order my 94 with 3.73 but I thought it would save on fuel too-now I learned the hard way. Try a K&N and some headers after you get the oil consumpt addressed. Don't chip it if you have to run 93 octane-that really adds up. And lastly do the math on 15,000 mi per year in your 8.1 at 11mpg vs a V8 grand cher0kee getting 15-16 mpg. The differnce is a few hundred bucks to drive the KING. And very lastly this is America where your Big Gulp soda costs more per gallon than imported/domestic gasoline....How'd I do Ben?
