Just replaced u-joints on my 95 K1500 last week, so the procedure is fresh in my mind.
before you remove the driveshaft, follow steps 1 thru 4 then just try to move the driveshaft side-to-side and see if there's any play. Basically check for the problem that could happen if you don't do step #8 correctly.
1. Park on level ground.
2. Block wheels.
3. Set parking brake.
4. Put xfer case in neutral (takes any load off driveshaft).
5. Use box wrench (think it's 1/2" or 13mm, something like that) to loosen 4 bolts. See image.
6. Use a big screwdriver to carefully pry out the driveshaft u-joint out of the yoke. Careful to keep the cups from flying off the u-joint, nothing is holding them onto the u-joint except grease.
7. Rotate driveshaft 180 degrees.
8. Re-insert u-joint bearing cups back into yoke. Make sure they are centered and fully seated on the u-joint. If they are not fully seated and not centered around rotational axis you will introduce a vibration.
9. Re-attach hold-down clamps and tighten all 4 bolts.
10. Test drive, see if it gets better.
Hope this helps...guys, did I forget to mention anything? Please review.
: : You may want to try to turn the driveshaft 180 degrees in relation to the rear end. in other words, disconnect the U-joint- turn the driveshaft a half turn and reconnect it to the rear end.
: How hard is it to get it off? What tools would I need?
