Grill Guard - do they really offer protection?

I was wondering if front grill guards really offer any protection. I guess if you hit something and you are traveling less than maybe 20mph it might protect your car. But I was wondering if at a fairly high speed accident if it would do more damage to your car than if you didn't have one.

Does anyone know?
