Chains for a '96 K1500

Damn, I'm forced to go on vacation with my boys over spring break. I've decided to roadtrip from Phoenix to Yosemite and Kings Canyon/Sequoia National Parks in the California Sierras. I've been told to expect snowy driving conditions, and the park service recommends you carry chains in case they are required. My experience with chains is old - putting on old-style, real chains on my dad's old '68 F250 rwd. But what are the general rules for chains and 4wd vehicles like our beloved suburbans?
