'91 Sub V2500 blues...lots of trouble, PLEASE help (quite long)

We took the '91 Sub V2500 out for a long drive today, and the experience was pretty bad. The engine would simply shut itself down while idling in a parking lot(randomly, it appeared). Also, while going down the road, it would just start sputtering, dropping RPMs, bringing them back up, dropping them, pinging a little, and either go back to normal or shut itself down. I'd have to pull over, and then restart it. When restarted, it would go fine for a while again, and then start acting up. Not cool when you're 70 miles from home with the wife and two kids.

Regardless, we nursed it home while avoiding the interstate, and in the process, it finally did turn on the "service engine light" again. Once it turned on the light, it stopped the bucking, but was totally gutless and had little power. The gas consumption was tremendous also.

I just ran the codes and got a whole list of them. They are: 12, 39, 42, 68, 85, 86, 87. Quite a few, and I'm not sure even where to start. My Haynes manual is worthless and doesn't list all of them.

Could a faulty ECM do all that? Does it also control the tranny (4L80E), or is it under a separate controller? Where do I start?

One point to note is that when I turned on the key to run the codes, the fuel pump did its usual humming noise, then I heard lots of gurgling and bubbling. The tank is quite low on gas now, even though it was nearly 3/4 full when we left. A second point to note is that the tranny would not shift into O/D at all during the whole trip, regardless of whether or not it was in O/D or D.

Any help or suggestions at all would be greatly appreciated. Right now, I'm glad my '89 Sub hasn't sold yet, because it looks like I'll still need it to get around.

Suggestions or tips can be posted on this board or emailed directly at cardo@seidata.com

Thanks folks.
