The oil life monitor does not check the oil at all. It simply monitors your driving habits and predicts what your oil change interval should be based on highway vs city, number of cold starts, number of hours engine run, etc. Again, it doesn't check the oil, it just predicts your interval based upon the above info.
Change it according to your schedule, not the computers. I change mine every 4-5K running Mobil 1.
