Got a 90 last summer knowing that the AC needed fixing. There was a leak in the aluminum line going to the rear AC at the steel clamp (bad metal/metal combo in salt!). Since we rarely use AC here, I had the rear AC sealed off and had the front AC converted to the new freon. There are a few minor modifications needed, but the new system works well, even in the occasional 90 deg days we do get. If you simply replace old freon with new type without modifying system, it won't work right. The conversion (and sealing off the rear line) and refill with new type freon only cost $180, which is less than the old type freon alone would have cost. Yes, the rear AC leak causes both front and rear AC to go out.
: I have a '93 Suburban with front and rear A/C. Is the freon system common to both A/Cs or are there separate freon systems? Both A/Cs seem to have died at the same time.
