*********************** Examples of LOW vs. HIGH CONTRAST Magazine Page Scan ******************
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Friends,
While preparing Cheyenne's TSB magazine article for posting, I got to thinking that there must be many others on this board who may need to post some graphics but can't, either due to lack of equipment or other resources.
So, I am now offering this service to EVERYONE on this board who needs help to post an image here. Free of charge.
Here is how it works:
A. If you have an image file, send it to me at
aplim@ev1.net
I'll place it on the web. I'll then send you the URL link for your image so that you can place it (the URL) in the last box in the message page. That is the box that says: "Optional Image URL". The image should then appear as the first item in you posted page.
Image files sent to me may be of any format you have available. I'll convert it as necessary for the web.
B. If you do not have an image file or scanner, send me the photograph or article by mail and I'll scan it and WEB it for you. Then I'll do the same as above so you can use it. If you need your items back, please include a self-stamped-addressed envelope so I can send it back to you. I advise that you write your name and address on the back of the items too just in case. Just email me for my postal address.
After conferring with a few other regular members of this board, we come up with the following rule or guideline, if you please:
0. Rule #0. We call it zero because there's no other more basic rules than this one. There will be NO PORNOGRAPHIC or INDECENT material accepted. Of course, all materials submitted must be closely related to the theme of this board.
1. The area of any color photographic image posted will be up to approximately 400x600 pixels.
2. The size of any black and white 8.5x11 printed matter submitted will be converted so that its width will fit on a 15" CRT screen for better text readability. No more than one such page may be requested at one time. However, I may increase it to 2 if and when I get more "Hosting volunteers" (see below).
3. For image scanning hints, see "Graphics Scanning Hints" at the end of this post.
4. The image will remain on the web for 45 days or until such time as I see fit to clear out some of files to meet the maximum home page allowable limit imposed by the server. For this reason, readers need to save the images as soon as they are posted and read. Subsequent viewers, after the 45 day period, may request the image from me via email (aplim@ev1.net).
5. Other rules may be added as we go along to keep this process from getting out of hand. If it does get out of hand, I may withdraw this offer anytime. After all it is just a free service from me.
If any of you can think of other items that I need to address, please email me you suggestions. I will appreciate it.
Now, I also need some help from you guys. I need a few volunteers from you board members to act as hosts to some of the free home pages that we would need to store the images for this board. The more volunteers we have, the longer that we would be able to keep the images on the board. Please be assured that you DON'T need to do any addition "web" work or know anything about make a home page. You would act only as host to some sites so I could use them for file storage. I would do all the dirty work. Those of you who are willing, please email me ASAP. I'll provide additional details.
Let's hear from the volunteers and get this thing going. Thanks.

GRAPHICS SCANNING HINTS:
There is no limit from me on the size of the image file you will send me. As long as the file size is within the limit of what your ISP allows you to send. Just keep in mind that I'd need as good a resolution as you possibly could give me for good results. I can take as big a file as you can throw my way (my email size limit is 10-megbytes!). I'll convert it to a size that is appropriate for the web.
Physical Image Size:
Keep in mind that to preserve resolution, it is easier to reduce than to stretch. So, I need for you to scan your photographs to a size twice its original PHISYCAL size if possible. For 8-1/2 x 11 magazine articles, scan it in its original size.
Image Resolution:
If possible, and within your own restrictions, scan all images in 200bpi minimum. Higher if you can get away with it!
For example:
1. Photos: If you have a 4x6 print, scanning the image to 8x12 at 100bpi is better than scanning it to 4x6 at 200bpi. So, do your best within your own limitations. Save it in *.jpg format.
2. Magazine Pages (8.5x11): Scan it to its actual size in black and white at 200bpi. Save it in *jpg format. For readability, for Newspaper article or such, scan it in HIGH CONTRAST and adjust the BRIGHTNESS so that the background is WHITE, or close to it. Try to make it look like the right hand picture I placed at the top of this post for example. Otherwise, the grayish background will drastically reduce readability. The is particularly bad with Newspaper articles because of bleed through from the back. However, if the page contains any photographs, the pictures will lose all of their gray scale. So, be your own judge. Decide for yourself on which one is more relevant to the subject of your post and scan accordingly.
3. In either case, I'll work with you as the need arises.
4. If you want me to do the scanning, send me a copy of the photo or article by mail. Just email me for my postal address.
