Last year we did the same. The rebuilt compressor died and filled the system whith its trash.Ened up replacing almost everything in the system front and rear. Over 2grand worth. If I had it to do all over again I would have had the components that collect trash (Drier and such) replaced whith a new compressor up front. Would have saved me about $800.00.

: DO NOT!!!!! let anybody talk you into a rebuilt compressor. I let the shop talk me into one last summer. Mine was making noise, so I went in to get it changed before it puked into my system. They installed a rebuilt, gave me credit for all my R-12, so I only had to buy a pound. A few days later, the rebuilt compressor puked its guts into my system about 30 minutes into my vacation drive. I had the rest of my vacation without AC. It took about 4 more trips and me finally insisting that they flush the entire system at their expense. They did so and the AC worked good the rest of the summer. Guess what? It doesn't work this year. ...so $500 last year and another $500 minimum this year. I'm getting a new compressor installed. I'm hoping the clutch is gone on the compressor and I won't have to pay for a whole system flush and 5 lbs of Freon. ...at my expense, because they only warranted the job for 6 months.
