Dealer can't find problem with fuel pump, any suggestions?

I've got a 96 GMC 1500, that twice in within two days wouldn't start after running for a few hours on the road.
When it won't start you can't here the hum of the fuel pump in the tank. When you finally hear the hum
it starts, but that may be an hour later. The dealer doesn't think it's the fuel pump, since it only happens at
startup and doesn't quit while it's running. We've tried changing the relay which didn't help. I questioned him
about changing the fuel filter and he didn't think it needed it unless we changed the fuel pump. They said
they need to reproduce the problem before they can fix it, but it won't do it in the shop. Any suggestions?

Thanks
