Jack, on the 87's anyway, it's an optical pickup that plugs into the back of the speedometer. The pickup senses road speed by 'reading' the revs of a reflective paddle wheel that's coupled to the speedometer. Its output goes to a control box mounted above the accelerator pedal.
Later models may have a different pickup if they use a digital input speedometer.
