Dealer Service Dept told me today their solution. Not sure if it comes from GM, or is simply the dealer's method. Here it is: Remove the decorative cap and the captive nuts. With a pair of diagonal pliers (or similar), snip off an even amount of each of the eight protrusions on the back side of the cap that are between the nuts. Reinstall and hand tighten with socket and 6-inch extension to the first detent after snug.
I haven't tried this method and therefore cannot ensure anyone that it works.
