Good Morning,
I am about to replace the Good Year Radial AT's on my 96 Sub 1500 LT 4x4. There are alot of options out there, so I though I would ask for some suggestions. These tires were on the truck when I bought it in 98. They have been OK, not great. This is my first Suburban, and I am not sure how to match the right tire with the almost 7000 lbs of truck. I have the factory wheels, and suspension.
Here are a few requirements of the tire: I live in rural Minnesota, so snow is a fact of life for at least six months. I hunt, so the sub is used for some off roading. I hunt in Colorado and other states, so the tire should have good road durability. And finally, when I am not using the sub for hunting, fishing, or camping, my wife owns it :-). (Actually, I feel much safer with her driving our 10 month old son around in that, as compared to my 88 ranger) She puts on some mileage, about 15-20K/year.
Anyway, try to explain that to an 18 year old "tire expert" and see what he shows you. Or better yet watch his eyes fill with terror as you ask for a single tire that has exceptional traction in dirt, sand, mud, snow, and ice, as well as good road durability and handling caracteristics.
After reading that, maybe I am asking for too much. Oh well, if any of you have any suggestions on a set of tires that will accomplish most of those things, I would appreciate it. Also please let me know what you would recommend for tire pressure. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
Have a good one!
