It's all controlled by vacuum. If you can get them to switch between defrost and floor, it sounds like there's vacuum up to the controls anyway. There may be a disconnected or pinched vacuum line in the controls or in the dash somewhere.

: Yesterday my air vents decided they prefer the defrost mode. I can get them to feet only, but nohting out the main vents. Did a quick visual for loose things, but didn't see anything obvious. We're in an apartment till the 28th, so most of my tools are in storage. :-(
